Why did my child get a "DQ"?

A disqualification (DQ) occurs when a swimmer breaks one of the technical rules for a specific stroke (such as an illegal kick, turning early, or not touching the wall with two hands). When a swimmer gets DQ'd, they still finish the race, but their time is not recorded for official placing or points.

DQs are very common, especially in younger swimmers or those swimming in their first few meets. Swimmers often start a race with perfect form but lose it once they get tired.

The purpose of a DQ is to teach the swimmer (and coach) what technical aspects need to be corrected in practice. If your child gets DQ'd, it should be treated as a learning opportunity, not a failure.

Common Reasons for Disqualification:

  • Breaststroke/Butterfly: One-handed touch at the wall (must use two hands), illegal kick, non-simultaneous arms or taking more than one dolphin kick during a pullout.
  • Backstroke: Turning onto the stomach too early before a turn or not staying on the back until the touch the wall on their finish.
  • Freestyle: Pulling on the lane line or pushing off the bottom of the pool.
  • Relays: Leaving the block before the teammate touches the wall.

If you or your swimmer have questions about a specific disqualification, please speak to one of coaches.
